How Filtration Addresses Each Threat

Here's the critical point: HEPA and activated carbon address fundamentally different pollutants. HEPA captures particles (PM2.5, dust, pollen, PM10). Activated carbon adsorbs gases and VOCs (odors, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, mercaptans). For landfill neighbors, you need both.

A purifier that advertises "HEPA" but has only a token carbon layer—a thin pre-filter—will not meaningfully reduce VOC exposure. Look for purifiers with a substantial activated carbon component, measured in pounds, not ounces.
